Call to extend drug testing on prisoners
ALL Scottish prisoners should face drug testing as they are admitted to jail, the Tories said today.
The call came as Community Safety Minister Fergus Ewing announced that drug treatment and testing orders (DTTOs) are to be extended to petty offenders in Lothian and Borders. They are currently only targeted at serious criminals.
If the pilot – first revealed in the Evening News yesterday – proves successful it could be rolled out across Scotland.
Tory community safety spokesman John Lamont today welcomed the announcement, but urged ministers to go further.
"We believe that another step must be comprehensive drug treatment and testing orders of every prisoner as they are admitted to prison and at regular intervals thereafter," he said.
"Today's announcement again does not go that far – this is an objective we will continue to press for.
"If we do not know the extent of the problem, we cannot hope to address it."
