Brussels delays aid for farmers
AID payments to farmers affected by the foot-and-mouth crisis have been held up by Brussels, it was revealed yesterday.
They were expecting 6 per ewe, but a bureaucratic hold-up by the European Commission means the Scottish Government cannot pay out 19 million in state aid until the end of the month, said Richard Lochhead, the rural affairs secretary.
Jim McLaren, the president of the NFU Scotland, said:
"I ask Brussels officials to recognise the disastrous consequences of foot-and-mouth disease and move as quickly as possible."
