Big Brother victory praised by Labour group

CITY politicians have offered their support to John Loughton following his victory on TV reality show Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack.

Labour councillors have submitted a motion to next week's full council meeting, asking Lord Provost George Grubb to convey the authority's congratulations to John and his family.

Leith councillor Gordon Munro said: "In these days of so-called 'celebrity culture' it is heartening to see good working-class values win through on the night. John is a credit to his family and the community of north Edinburgh. His latest success deserves recognition by the city he loves."

John is chairman of the Scottish Youth Parliament, and won a community involvement award at the first Evening News Young Edinburgh Awards in 2004 for working with the elderly in Muirhouse and Pilton.

Labour group leader Ewan Aitken said: "John is symbolic of the success of the Young Edinburgh initiative.

"Young Edinburgh has produced another winner, whose qualities have been nationally recognised."
