226 litter fines handed out by the city council in 12 months

MORE than 200 litter fines were handed out in Edinburgh during a 12-month period, a new survey has found.

The Capital spends an annual 10 million on street cleaning but the city council handed out only 226 on-the-spot fines of 50 for dropping litter between April 2007 and April 2008.

Councils have the power to hand out on-the-spot fines for dropping anything from a crisp packet to a cigarette butt.

Culprits who do not pay the fine can be taken to court, where they can face a fine of up to 2000 and a criminal record.

The survey of Scotland's 32 local authorities found nine had not used the powers to issue fines at all, 14 gave out fewer than ten fines, and almost two-thirds issued fewer than 25.
