Police use beer mats to get the message across on rape

POLICE in Edinburgh are to launch the latest stage in a new campaign against rape.

Officers began distributing beer mats yesterday near pubs and clubs brandishing the message: "Drinking is not a crime - rape is."

It follows on from postcards being handed out to revellers last week with the same message.

Detective superintendent Lesley Boal, force lead for public protection, said: "The latest phase of the campaign will see beer mats distributed to pubs and clubs in time for the Hogmanay celebrations.

"We are using what is one the busiest nights of the year to enforce the message that anyone who uses alcohol as a tool to sexually exploit someone, or who exploits them when they are incapable of freely consenting, could very well find themselves the subject of a criminal investigation for serious sexual crime."
