Police stepping up security for Zara wedding
POLICE officers carried out security checks including examining drains yesterday around the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh ahead of the wedding of Zara Phillips and England rugby star Mike Tindall on Saturday.
Among the 300 guests will be the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and sports stars including Tindall's team-mates.
Security costs for the wedding of the Queen's granddaughter, who is 13th in line for the throne, are estimated at 500,000.
Superintendent Ivor Marshall, the Silver Commander, responsible for security arrangements said the kirk's location, close to both the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and set on the tourist hub of the Royal Mile presented unique challenges.
