Police scrap with rogue metal men

ROGUE scrap metal dealers in the Lothians are being targeted by police.

Officers joined forces with officials from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, West Lothian Council Trading Standards and the Department of Social Security yesterday to carry out organised road checks in West Lothian to try and catch dealers selling stolen metal.

Itinerant metal dealers must be registered with a local authority and licensed before they can trade.

A police spokeswoman said: "Scrap metal thefts are becoming common throughout the country, and we are joining with partners to ensure rogue dealers are not welcome.

"By targeting dealers in both West Lothian and Strathclyde we are sending out a strong message that this kind of crime will not be tolerated.

"We will also work with legitimate dealers to raise awareness of the issue and stop them buying on stolen metal."
