Police want youth curfew for reoffenders

POLICE are investigating imposing a curfew on youngsters in Inverness to stem rising youth crime in the Highland capital.

Northern Constabulary has approached the Scottish Government with plans for what would be the country's first night-time curfew on repeat offenders under 16.

Youths aged 17 and under have been charged with nearly 4,500 crimes – including sexual offences and some involving violence – in the last three years. The total includes 639 committed by children aged 12 and under.

Bruce Duncan, Northern Constabulary's head of operations, said the force had Scotland's lowest levels of crime and the highest detection rate, but youth crime trends were being monitored.
