Police unveil mobile metal detectors to catch knives
NEW portable metal detectors to help police crack down on knife crime have been unveiled.
Officers said the detectors, which can be set up at in less than a minute, will increase passenger safety at train stations and sound a clear warning to anyone carrying a knife.
The Scottish Government has spent 90,000 on 16 detectors. Unlike arched detectors, the new pole-shaped device can be quickly moved and set up and has a 360-degree range.
Strathclyde Police were given seven of the scanners, Lothian and Borders Police received two and the other forces, including British Transport Police, received one each.
The scanners will also be used in settings such as nightclubs, football matches and large public events.
Chief Inspector Graham Goulden, of Strathclyde Police, said: "The benefit of metal- detecting poles is threefold.
"Not only can they be used to detain those carrying weapons, they send out a clear warning to those thinking of carrying them that such behaviour will not be tolerated.
"In addition, they reassure the public that we take this issue seriously, are doing everything we can tackle it and that it is safe for them to go out and enjoy Scotland's cities."
