Police take hunt for agony aunt's killer back to the street

POLICE last night launched a large-scale operation in the area where a Glasgow radio agony aunt was murdered.

The body of Nasim Jamil, 54, was discovered by her daughter in the Awaz FM presenter's flat in Byres Road.

She had suffered severe head injuries – believed to have been caused by a glass bottle – in the brutal attack last Wednesday.

Detectives mingled with Christmas shoppers on Saturday as they stepped up their investigations. Now, however, they have turned their attention back to Byres Road, in the West End.

Officers interviewed locals and a mobile poster showing a picture of Mrs Jamil was driven around surrounding streets. A leafleting campaign was also conducted, targeting residents and retailers.

On Monday, police admitted that they were struggling to find a motive for the killing.

Mohammad Sarwar, Labour MP for Glasgow Govan, said the killer could have been an "irate" listener to Mrs Jamil's radio show, which dealt with tough family issues.

However, that suggestion was rejected by bosses at the radio station, which is based in Pollokshields in Glasgow

Last night, Detective Chief Inspector Louise Raphael, of Strathclyde Police, renewed the appeal to the public for information.

She said: "So far, our response from the local community has been encouraging, but I would like to repeat my appeal to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Byres Road during the afternoon or evening of 9 December, or to anyone who may have information, to make contact with us."

The officer went on: "Byres Road is an extremely busy road, and this operation is about jogging the memories of members of the public who were in the area last Wednesday, when Nasim was brutally murdered."

Both uniformed and plainclothes police targeted Glasgow's West End from 2pm until early evening yesterday.
