Police study CCTV after youths stab OAP

POLICE were today scouring CCTV footage in their hunt for a group of youths who stabbed a pensioner walking to a bus stop.

The 68-year-old victim felt a "punch" to his back as he walked along the High Street in Tranent where the road joins to Bridge Street between 7.30pm and 8.30pm on Saturday. He only realised he had been stabbed after he made it back to his home in Musselburgh.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment for the puncture wound and was kept in the hospital overnight for observation.

Inspector Colin Brown, sector inspector for the East Lothian area, said: "We are waiting to re-interview the victim as his memory of what happened was quite hazy. He saw a group of youths in the area but he wasn't sure it was one of them.

"He suffered a small puncture wound which could have been from a knife or a bottle or some unknown object. There are a number of CCTV cameras around High Street and Bridge Street and they are very good quality.

"We would hope to identify the attackers from that."
