Police investigate snooker result
POLICE are investigating the result of a snooker match between Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett.
The first-round UK Championship match on 15 December, which has been the subject of investigations by World Snooker and the Gambling Commission, was won 9-3 by Maguire.
Maguire beat his fellow Scot by that margin after Burnett missed a black in the 12th frame, which would have reduced his arrears to 8-4.
World Snooker were contacted before the match by bookmakers who reported suspicious betting patterns on the outcome, with heavy gambling on the 9-3 scoreline.
Both players have since said they have nothing to hide, and have pledged to comply with any investigation.
A Strathclyde Police statement said: "Strathclyde Police economic crime unit can confirm that after consultation with the Procurator Fiscal's office we are carrying out official enquiries into the matter."
Burnett's miss on the frame-ball black was criticised by commentators on the match, however he denied again recently attempting to fix the result.
