Police detain anti-Kremlin protesters
POLICE thwarted a banned anti-Kremlin protest in Moscow yesterday, seizing demonstrators and shoving them into lorries. Organisers said 130 people were detained, but police put the number at 90.
Other Russia, the opposition movement headed by the Kremlin critic and former chess champion Garry Kasparov, said the co-leader of the group was seized.
The Other Russia movement organised the protest, in defiance of a ban, to draw attention to Russia's economic troubles and to protest against Kremlin plans to extend the presidential term from four years to six.
Mr Kasparov and other liberals have launched an anti-Kremlin movement called Solidarity to unite Russia's liberal forces and encourage a popular revolution.
