Polar bears on thin ice
Polar bears at the St Felicien Wildlife Zoo in Canada. According to Environment Canada, Canada is home to approximately 15,000 of the estimated 20,000-25,000 polar bears worldwide.
They are listed as a species of special concern by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, while last year, the US listed the polar bear as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act because their sea ice habitat is melting. Photographs: Reuters
