Plenty of projects for Mach treatment
Strange brick heads standing sentry along the M8, a classical temple constructed out of old car tyres, and now a Christ-like figure fashioned from wire coathangers. Is there no end to the ingenuity of sculptor David Mach?
While some might question the artistic validity of his works (and plenty have questioned the cost to the public purse), there can be no denying that Mr Mach is a dab hand when it comes to recycling, and surely in these straitened times his skills should be deployed in ways to find uses for other discarded or discredited items.
An obvious starting point would be to find a use for all the rail lines which will now not be laid down Leith Walk when the Edinburgh trams stop at St Andrew's Square. Perhaps he could build a rollercoaster outside Ocean Terminal to remind locals (and Forth Ports) of what might have been but never was.
Or maybe he could transform the Scottish football side into a team to once again grace the World Cup finals.
Perhaps his greatest triumph would be turning the Scottish Conservative Party into something useful. But some jobs might be beyond even the greatest creative mind. Maybe he'll have to settle for Annabel Goldie's bust along the M8 made from old cashmere.
