Plea to Scottish cities to take in refugees
THE head of the United Nations' refugee agency in the UK says cities such as Edinburgh and Aberdeen should follow Motherwell's lead and take in more migrants.
Rolland Schilling, the newly appointed UN High Commissioner for Refugees representative to the UK, flagged up the Lanarkshire town as the only one in Scotland housing refugees under the Gateway Protection Programme.
The scheme allows certain refugee camp inmates to enter the UK because they have already been granted refugee status.
There are 758 Gateway refugees in the UK, 79 of them in Motherwell.
Mr Schilling said: "Governments in Europe have focused on how to make access more difficult. As a consequence, the doors to reach protection for many refugees are shut.
"Motherwell has done what it can to protect these people.
"Other municipalities such as Edinburgh and Aberdeen could give sanctuary."
