Plea for action on drug abuse
NEW data on illegal drug-taking increases the need for action on the issue, a senior minister has said.
A study released yesterday revealed that while substance abuse in the Lothians was of concern, it paled in comparison to many other parts of Scotland.
The Glasgow University paper estimated there were around 5,300 drug abusers in Edinburgh – 1.61 per cent of its population.
Figures in the rest of Lothian were also low, compared to the 3.27 per cent of Glasgow's population who abuse drugs.
Community safety minister Fergus Ewing said: "Dealing with Scotland's drugs problem involves education, prevention, treatment and enforcement, and a shared determination."
