Pilots avoid a mid-air collision by just 100ft

A HELICOPTER and a plane came within 100 feet of colliding over the skies above Glasgow, according to an official probe.

The plane – which was flying in the opposite direction to circuit traffic – was “unaware” of the helicopter despite being so close.

The incident, 2.3 nautical miles north of Cumbernauld on 6 August occurred where the helicopter was conducting a licence skills test and two aircraft were reported heading in the wrong direction.

One of the light aircraft – returning from the island of Mull – turned about 100ft beneath the helicopter. The helicopter assessed the risk as “medium”.
