Pensioner staff levels 'to soar in next decade'
THE number of people working on past the state retirement age is set to more than double during the coming ten years, according to research.
Businesses are braced for a surge in people delaying retirement, with 1.8 million people expected to continue in employment beyond the state pension age by 2019, according to insurer Prudential.
About 753,000 people are currently still in work despite being above the state pension age of 60 for women and 65 for men, which is being increased to 65 for both sexes by 2020.
One in four of 500 finance directors questioned said they expected to see a rise in people working on past retirement age in the coming ten years, rising to 39 per cent among larger firms.
Companies estimate over 6 per cent of staff will be 65 or older by 2019, more than double the 2.6 per cent of people currently working despite being able to claim the state pension.
