I was very interested to read about the “peak beard” study, which found that beards become less attractive to potential partners as more and more men grow them, and by people’s responses to the news in your Twitter column (17 April).
The research found that clean-shaven men appeared to be more attractive to women when the latter were shown images of multiple bearded fellows.
I read that the study involved showing the women photographs of men, rather than having them in the same room.
I am no way a scientist, but surely the physical presence of a hirsute human would have more of an impact than a two-dimensional image, given the importance of subtle smells and hormones.
Of course, this could have a powerfully negative affect too, as I’m sure most of us have experienced.
Either way, it’s all very fascinating.
