PROTESTERS demonstrated against controversial Fringe musical Jerry Springer The Opera when it was staged at Edinburgh's George Square Theatre.

Pastor John Bell of the Zion Baptist Church denounced the musical as an offence against God.

He said: "We're here because this show is blasphemous. It shows Christ as a homosexual and features God raping women.

"We know we can't stop them from running but it's an insult to God's honour and we're here to defend that honour.

"The reason it's popular is because it reflects society – people who go to this want to see filth."

Despite the protesters, long queues formed for the show, which organisers say is selling well.
