POLICE seized 20 litres of alcohol from schoolchildren gathered at Leith Links before classes.
Officers stopped and searched 28 underage youths after receiving a tip-off from a member of the public.
Inspector Kevin Mclean said he believed the 16 and 17-year-olds, thought to be from Leith Academy, had intended to drink the booze before their last day at school yesterday.
He said: “We don’t want to be party poopers but it’s important to get the message out there that they shouldn’t be in possession of alcohol and we won’t tolerate anything that could end in antisocial behaviour.”
The pupils were given warnings and now police are working to find out where the alcohol came from.
Elsewhere, police were called to reports of school leavers from Portobello High causing a nuisance in Brighton Park at lunchtime.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “On arrival, no complaints were made and no damage was observed.
“Any youth issues the local community wish to raise with police will be referred to the school link officer.”
