Parents' school placing requests fall
THE number of requests from parents to have their child placed in a school of their choice has fallen by 5 per cent, according to figures released yesterday.
Some 28,645 requests were made last year for pupils to be sent to a school outwith their catchment area, down from 30,240 in the previous year. The proportion of requests granted remained steady at about 85 per cent, the Scottish Government figures showed.
The Tories questioned why more requests had not been granted.
"If there have been 5 per cent fewer requests made by parents to have their child placed in a school of their choice then surely we would expect local authorities to be able to satisfy a higher percentage of placement requests than they did last year," said the Tory schools spokeswoman, Liz Smith.
The statistics revealed that nearly two-thirds of the placing requests were for primary schools, of which 88 per cent were granted.
