Owner wants gas tower to be bulldozed

A LANDMARK gas tower is set to be pulled down, despite a campaign to save it as a piece of local history.

Campaigners had hoped to retain the 106-year-old Granton gas tower as a memorial to the area's past.

But owners National Grid have now submitted an application to the city council requesting permission to demolish the historic tower.

The move came after a report suggested it would cost more than 7 million to keep the tower.

The distinctive blue structure was granted special protected status by Historic Scotland in 1998 to avoid the threat of it being ripped down without permission.

Despite that, National Grid has always maintained that the structure is in such a poor state that the only realistic option is for it to be demolished.
