Out-of-towners not put off city by disruption, says poll

THE prospect of years of tram roadworks does not appear to be putting people off coming to Edinburgh, says a new poll.

A total of 78 per cent of those surveyed who travel around the Capital at least once a month for non-business reasons say they would not be put off doing this journey as a result of the works.

Mori's poll on the 498 million project commissioned by the Open for Business steering group sampled 1505 people living within a one-hour drive of the city centre.

Another question in the survey saw trams come out on top of a list of things people would like to see done to improve transport links around Edinburgh.

Willie Gallagher, executive chairman of TIE, said: "A commitment to keep Edinburgh open for business throughout construction works has been at the core of all of our planning.

"The survey shows that this work is bearing fruit. However, we are aware our commitment must remain firm as the tram scheme comes to life on the streets of Edinburgh."
