Oscar nominations: British hopes rest with Christie and Day Lewis
DANIEL Day-Lewis and Julie Christie will lead Britain's bid for success at this year's Academy Awards.
Day-Lewis is among the eight nominations received by Texas oil drama There Will Be Blood. Modern western No Country for Old Men also received eight nominations.
Christie was nominated for her performance as a victim of Alzheimer's Disease in Away From Her.
British film Atonement has scored seven Oscar nominations, including best picture.
Its 13-year-old star, Irish schoolgirl Saoirse Ronan, is in the running for the title of best supporting actress.
There was disappointment for Scotsman James McAvoy, who misses out despite being widely tipped to receive a best actor nomination for his role in Atonement.
