Opticians see to it that walk helps charity

OPTICIANS staff in Edinburgh and Musselburgh have helped raise hundreds of pounds for charity after completing a sponsored five-mile walk.

Workers at two Specsavers Opticians stores, in The Jewel and Musselburgh's High Street, raised more than 600 from the event this week, which will be donated to Diabetes UK.

Musselburgh store director Diana McFarlane, who took part in the race, said: "We are delighted to have raised this money thanks to family and friends and I hope this can help make a difference in future diabetes research.

"Every five minutes a person is diagnosed with diabetes. It is also the leading cause of blindness in the UK's working age population."

Diabetes UK spokesperson Alan McGinley added: "Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in the UK's working age population, so it is vital that we raise awareness as well as money to fund research into the causes and treatment of diabetes and retinopathy."
