Opposition leader's jail term confirmed

Sri Lanka's president Mahinda Rajapaksa approved a 30-month jail term for former army chief and political rival Sarath Fonseka yesterday.

The move confirmed a military court finding of fraud and could disqualify the former general from politics.

He is set to appeal the president's ruling in a civilian court, which his party said amounted to "political revenge".
