I WAS more than a little a little nonplussed to read (your report, 29 May) that Alex Neil MSP is “not thinking in terms of a referendum, but rather the principles of the bill”.
This certainly gives the impression that independence is not the minister’s top priority
There was also paradox in that a few days before he announced the Scottish Government’s intention to legislate on same-sex marriage, there was yet another demonstration of over a million people in Paris in defence of marriage.
These demonstrations have shaken the French government to its roots. In fact the Scottish Government is in an even more vulnerable position than the French government as it seeks a referendum majority while antagonising substantial parts of the electorate with this proposed legislation.
