Ukraine disaster

YOUR correspondent, Lloyd Anderson of the British Council Scotland, described recent events in Ukraine as a setback (Letters,
1 April).

I would beg to differ. It is a catastrophe for the people of Ukraine, for Europe and the world in general.

Since when has the destruction of more than 30 years of progress towards stability in Europe, including shameful wars in the Balkans, the deaths in the Maidan (Independence Square in Kiev) and the resulting misery caused, amounted to a mere setback.

Russia, under president Vladimir Putin, has torn up any pretence of civility and cultural respect.

Shame on anyone who would reduce this disastrous situation to the status of a “setback”.
