Truth overdue

Secretary of State for Scotland Michael Moore’s contortions in trying to claim that Scotland’s huge oil revenues somehow result from being part of the UK at least provide an entertaining moment of political comedy.

Rather than the desperate denial of an inconvenient truth, it would be refreshing to hear the UK Government, the Better Together campaign and the pro-Union parties come out and admit that Scotland’s financial position is substantially stronger than that of the UK as a whole.

All too often both sides of this debate have made assertions based on what they wish to be true rather than what is actually the case. Greater honesty all round would surely improve the level of public engagement in this seismic political event.
