I did wonder how long it would take before someone claimed that our recent cold spring proved that global warming isn’t happening and Iain McConnell (Letters, 1 June) duly obliged.

While April was unduly cold in western Europe and North America, temperatures of up to 5°C above normal were experienced in Greenland, North East Canada and the whole of Northern Russia.

The clue to understanding global warming is in the name - ie global. April’s global average temperatures were 0.5°C above the 1951 to 1980 normal.
