Given that “lessons were learned” from the London Olympics (your report, 19 December), it is hardly surprising that the security budget for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has been increased.

However, while it is important that the safety of the participants and spectators is not left to chance, a trebling of the budget does seem rather excessive for an event which can never aspire to the heights of the Olympics.

With your columns also highlighting a fall in hospital beds and Scottish roads reputedly having the worst potholes in the UK, one can’t help feeling that Alex Salmond is getting some of his priorities wrong.
