You report that a hall of residence at St Andrews University is looking for a new name, “with the inventor of the kaleidoscope and golfing great Seve Ballesteros among the early suggestions” (16 February).
Just to be clear about this, the inventor of the kaleidoscope was Sir David Brewster, a former principal of the university.
No offence to Seve Ballesteros, but Brewster Hall is a whole lot easier to say than Ballesteros Hall. In any case, it seems invidious to single out in this way only one of the many great golfers who have played the Old Course.
