School religion

B McGuire (Letters, 22 June) seems to confuse religious
observance in schools assemblies with religious and philosophical education classes.

Children should certainly have the opportunity to learn about the world’s various religious beliefs and customs, but they should not be subjected to “instruction” in one particular religion (Christianity), which is what happens at present in assemblies (it’s a legal requirement).

Consequently, I have started a petition calling on the Scottish Government to end compulsory worship in schools by repealing that law.

Readers who agree with me can sign the petition at and search for my name.
