Saltire defiance

Those complaining about Alex Salmond waving the Saltire at Wimbledon remind me of a Second World War story when an officious naval officer at Gibraltar signalled a passing ship to take down the Saltire from its mast. The ship was SS Clan Lamont commanded by Captain Angus Campbell, from the Isle of Harris.

Capt Campbell replied that a Scottish-registered ship with two Scottish regiments on board was entitled to fly the Saltire. He then ordered a piper to play on deck as the Clan Lamont sailed on to land the troops at Oran, Algeria. During the war he was decorated three times for bravery at sea.
