Safety drive

David Roche writes in reply to my letter about car visibility (Letters, 7 August), that in his opinion, car running lights are useless and dangerous. He considers that dipped head lights should be used instead.

However, research quoted by the European Commission (EC) states that all road users can detect vehicles with running lights better than those using dipped headlights.

As a result of all this, the EC required that all new cars and light delivery vans being put forward for type approval from 7 February, 2011, must have running lights (lights that automatically switch on when the vehicle is started) fitted as standard. This step will greatly
improve road safety throughout Europe.
