YOUR report mentions Routine Row, “Anstruther”, in a litany of boring and monotonous names (“Dull, boring, bland and proud of it”, 1 June). The street in question is actually in Kilrenny, part of the United Burghs of Kilrenny (including Cellardyke), Anstruther Easter and Anstruther Wester, which used to be the longest burgh name in Scotland. Nothing boring about that.
There are streets called Routine Row all over the UK, the name being an attempt to disguise an original Rotten or Ratton Row, ie a street of hovels infested by rats. Routine sounds so much nicer, even if it is rather dull, boring or monotonous.
