Rail reality check

While it is good to hear positive news about the tram project, Edinburgh council leaders are getting rather carried away when they claim that trams will be “running on the streets of Edinburgh within weeks” (your report, 6 November).

The test section of track between Gogar and the airport runs entirely through open countryside, many miles away from any Edinburgh streets.

The only street-running section of tram route will be from Haymarket to York Place in the city centre, and – judging by current progress – I suspect it will be well into the second half of 2013 before we see any trams venturing onto that section, for the first time since 1956.

Perhaps some tentative flag-waving will be appropriate on that occasion?
