Poor showing

Have your say

So, EDINBURGH Festival
director Jonathan Mills gets a knighthood (your report, 15 June). I wonder what for? I have been a frequent critic of Mr Mills, not least for his opera programmes, which have got worse every year. This year we get only three operas, one of them a Fidelio set in a spaceship.

Perhaps Mr Mills is being rewarded for his attempts to ignore Scottish culture and reinforce our “Britishness”. Last year, for example, he opened the festival with a Handel work composed to celebrate the crushing of the Scots at Culloden. It is my judgment that he has been the worst festival director since I began attending in 1963. Still, the good news is he is going next year.
