Peace of wisdom

I see my old friend and colleague David Martin MEP is quoting the words of Madeleine Albright in opposition to independence (Letters, 13 November).

What she actually said, “in the modern world we achieve more working together”, does not preclude an independent Scotland which would work together in the EU, the United Nations and every other international agency but representing the people of Scotland not being dragged on the coat tails of US foreign policy.

I do also recall Madeleine Albright’s most famous saying, that the death of half a million children in Iraq was “a price worth paying”!

It is this kind of wisdom that led us to the disastrous Iraq war in which many Scottish soldiers died as well as many thousands of Iraqis. So forgive me if I prefer a more peace-loving independent Scotland.
