It is welcome news that composer Hamish MacCunn is included in the first 12 Scots to be honoured under the Commemorative Plaque Scheme for Scotland (your report, 11 November).

Whatever the result of the 2014 referendum, maybe James MacMillan could adapt MacCunn’s wonderful piece Land of the Mountain and the Flood to create a far better national anthem than those currently on offer; and while it needs no words, if they are required, our makar Liz Lochhead or poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy could pen some forward-looking inspirations rather than nostalgic sentiment.
