A CURIOUS thing happened when gay couples decided they preferred marriage to civil partnership – the churches suddenly discovered the institution was “under attack”. They had apparently not noticed that for decades growing numbers of families without fathers had been making marriage look old-fashioned, if not redundant.
Britain is hysterical about the safety of children and we are admonished to take exercise, eat healthily, stop smoking and even combat global warming to protect them. But political and religious leaders dare not mention the greater risks to children of being brought up by cohabiting or single parents rather than married parents in a family. Perhaps when same-sex marriage is in the statute book, the Coalition for Marriage will begin to address the real threat to the practice.
