Let’s keep it civil

Further to the contribution from Richard Lucas (Letters, 26 July) about attitudes to individuals who are born with an attraction to the same sex rather than the more usual cross-sex attraction.

We are fortunate in this country that we have developed a more enlightened and tolerant attitude to people with different sexual attitudes. Sadly many Christian churches have been very slow to show understanding of those whose sexual identity is different from the majority.

The treatment of same-sex couples in many Commonwealth countries is deplorable, with same-sex relationships outlawed and individuals persecuted verbally and physically. Often their lives are endangered.

Surely Christians in Britain would want to show love and understanding of our fellow human beings in the Commonwealth who may have different sexual mores from the majority and would strongly disapprove of the persecution of a minority with an inborn different psychological outlook? Same-sex relationships have been around since the beginning of time, long before the Bible or Christianity was even thought of.

I certainly would not wish to return to the “western civilisation” of 50 years ago with its inequalities and intolerance.
