In praise of unity

Following the independence referendum, thanks be to God for Les Ecossais, for four good reasons.

First, for an exemplary lesson to the citizens of Scotland, Wales and England, and Europe, in the exercise of democratic citizenship (84 per cent participation in the referendum). Second, you have given Westminster MPs a healthy shake-up to the effect that regional questions, difficulties and problems require specific local attention and funds to further justice for all concerned.

Third, united decisions are better than individualistic ones. An idealistic solution to human problems is too often only ideological, and not capable of achieving our ultimate good, very often.

Fourth, unity is better than division, especially in Europe, despite the difficulties and the sacrifices involved.
