WITH regards to the ongoing argument about our nuclear deterrent, it never fails to amaze me that some people still swallow the old story that Trident is all about defence. Former prime minister Tony Blair said that reason and logic pointed to getting rid of nuclear weapons, but “the downgrading of our status as a nation” was too big a price to pay.

Trident’s only function is as an icon of British nationalism. Most other countries happily eschew such expensive dangerous and immoral symbols of superiority.
