So who are these people who declared Hollywood star Michael Douglas a “legend” (your report, 4 September)?

As I recollect it, a legend was a tale of “derring do” or an accomplishment by a hero or heroine.

Nowadays there are as many people called legends as there are “sirs” and “dames”.

In my opinion, the only personage in his lifetime and in mine who might be seen to have been a legend is the late Labour Party politician Michael Foot.
