Contrary to Dr Mary Brown (Letters, 14 June) Michael Kelly did not “conflate religious belief … with a belief that homosexuality is perverted or wrong”. The two are closely linked.
The Pew Research Centre has released a study of 39 nations showing acceptance of homosexuality strongly correlates with lack of religion. With few exceptions the more religious a country is, the more homophobic it is. The current pogrom against gays in Africa is led by local churches.
That some believers now reject homophobia is welcome, but does not change the fact that monotheistic religions remain the well-spring of prejudice.
