In your article (25 June) that covers Andy Murray’s recollections of the day Thomas Hamilton shot 16 primary school children and their teacher, before shooting himself, you indicate that Hamilton was a scout leader.
This is not the first time you have indicated this in the context of the massacre, and it is not correct.
Thomas Hamilton ran a boys’ club, not a scout troop. He applied to become a scout leader and his application was turned down as the commissioners considered he was not a suitable candidate.
This was covered in detail in the public enquiry.
Unfortunately, the local police failed to exercise as much care in granting him a gun licence.
