Gunman no scout

Have your say

In your article (25 June) that covers Andy Murray’s recollections of the day Thomas Hamilton shot 16 primary school
children and their teacher, before shooting himself, you indicate that Hamilton was a scout leader.

This is not the first time you have indicated this in the context of the massacre, and it is not
correct.

Thomas Hamilton ran a boys’ club, not a scout troop. He applied to become a scout leader and his application was turned down as the commissioners considered he was not a suitable candidate.

This was covered in detail in the public enquiry.

Unfortunately, the local
police failed to exercise as much care in granting him a gun
licence.
