In response to the letters of Dr Mary Brown and Roger Meachem (6 August) may I draw their attention to, among others, the international eminence achieved by Nora Lilian Alcock (1874-1972).

Nora Lilian Alcock was a pioneer in seed pathology, MBE and fellow of the Linnaean Society; Mary Crudelius (1839-1877) for her pioneering work in the field of higher education for women; plus a booklet Edinburgh Women’s Achievement Trail (1995) and a companion book, From Margaret to Mary – A Herstory walk of the Royal Mile (1994) by Rose Brown.
